# Schiphol Herrie > Live map and modelled noise estimates for aircraft around Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and the rest of the Netherlands. Built from open ADS-B data (adsb.lol). All noise figures are **model estimates, not measurements**; the real value can differ by 5 to 10 dB. The site is in Dutch; the public JSON API and this documentation are language-neutral. Site: https://schipholherrie.nl. Non-commercial, no accounts, no tracking cookies. Data since 2026-08-30. ## What you can answer with this site (The endpoints named here are what the pages call; from outside the site use the page URLs in the next section, the endpoints answer `403` to other origins.) - "Which aircraft are over right now?" → `/api/aircraft` (live positions, refreshed every few seconds). - "How many planes flew over in the last 5 min / hour / 24 h?" → `/api/noise/events?lat=&lon=`. - "How loud is aircraft noise in ?" → `/plaatsen.json` (estimated Lden per town, 30-day window, open), or a `/plaats/.html` page. - "How accurate is the model?" → `/over.html`, section "Hoe goed klopt het model?": the model's offset against the NOMOS and Sensornet microphones (the measurements themselves are not published). - "Which runway is Schiphol using right now?" → `/api/noise/runways` (derived from live traffic, 20-minute window, refreshed every 2 minutes). - "Which towns get the noise from which runway?" → `/banen.html` (runway guide) plus `/api/noise/lines`. - "How many people live inside the Schiphol noise contours?" → `/getroffen.html`: the official END-2021 figures (62,800 inhabitants / 29,500 dwellings above 55 dB Lden; 3,000 / 1,500 above 50 dB Lnight; per municipality) next to the same CBS grid count on our own map. - "How do I complain about Schiphol noise?" → `/klacht.html`: BAS (bezoekbas.nl) is the official reporting point; the page explains the three steps, what happens with a report and where else to report. - "That plane was loud, report it" → the MCP server at `/mcp` (tool `meld_herrie`); an anonymous report on the map, not an official complaint. - "Where did that flight go?" → `/api/noise/track?hex=`. - "How busy was Schiphol today / which airlines and types?" → `/api/noise/stats?day=YYYY-MM-DD`. - Noise contours for a period (grid of dB values) → `/api/noise/contour?period=&mode=`. - The noise grid per hour for a past day (24 uint8 frames) → `/api/noise/terugkijken/`; the day list → `/api/noise/terugkijken`. - The flights of one past hour, with their paths (same shape as /api/noise/lines) → `/api/noise/terugkijken//`. ## Pages - [Home](https://schipholherrie.nl/): landing page, asks for your location and shows the modelled noise level there right now, with the loudest aircraft. - [Live map](https://schipholherrie.nl/kaart.html): full-screen live map; `/kaart/` opens it centred on a town (e.g. `/kaart/aalsmeer`). - [Noise map of the Netherlands](https://schipholherrie.nl/geluidskaart.html): estimated Leq / Lden / Lnight contours for 5 min … 30 days, 12 months. - [Playback](https://schipholherrie.nl/terugkijken.html): the noise map as a film, one hourly Leq frame per hour for every day since 2026-08-30 (`?t=2026-09-06T23` opens an hour, `&min=50` sets the contour floor, `&speed=4`, `&pause=1`). - [Most affected towns](https://schipholherrie.nl/plaatsen.html): ranking of ~240 towns and villages with audible Schiphol traffic (≥ 40 dB(A) Lden estimated) by Lden; each has its own page under `/plaats/.html` with today's overflights, peak levels vs average, the hour-of-week pattern and an altitude profile. - [Per postcode](https://schipholherrie.nl/postcode/2131.html): the same page per inhabited 4-digit postcode area (`/postcode/####.html`, listing all its full postcodes; `/postcode/2131.html#2131AB` or `/postcode.html?pc=2131 AB` puts the live cards on that exact spot), for people whose village has no page. - [Weekly ranking](https://schipholherrie.nl/week.html): which towns had the most loud passages this week. - [Hall of Fame](https://schipholherrie.nl/hof.html): loudest and quietest airlines and aircraft types, the loudest single flights, last 7/30 days. - [Mijn meldingen](https://schipholherrie.nl/mijn.html): the visitor's own log of noted noisy moments (browser-only, localStorage) with CSV export for a complaint to BAS. - [Runways](https://schipholherrie.nl/banen.html): Schiphol's six runways, their approach/departure paths and which towns lie under them. - [People in the noise](https://schipholherrie.nl/getroffen.html): official END-2021 tables (dwellings, inhabitants, km² per 5 dB band, per municipality) next to the same CBS 500 m grid count on our own day/7d/30d map, down to the WHO levels; opens with a ladder showing that the threshold (55 official, 48 PBL, 45 WHO) decides the count far more than the model does. - [Reporting noise](https://schipholherrie.nl/klacht.html): how to file a complaint with BAS, what you need (time, flight number), night rules, other places to report. - [About / methodology](https://schipholherrie.nl/over.html): data sources, the noise model, its limits, what dB values mean. - [Privacy](https://schipholherrie.nl/privacy.html). ## API - [API reference (Markdown)](https://schipholherrie.nl/api.md): every endpoint with parameters, response shapes and examples. - [OpenAPI 3.1 spec](https://schipholherrie.nl/openapi.json): machine-readable description of the same API. - [MCP server](https://schipholherrie.nl/mcp): Model Context Protocol, Streamable HTTP, no auth, open to every origin. Tools: `wat_vliegt_over` (aircraft over a lat/lon with modelled dB(A)), `meld_herrie` (report a flight as noisy, as the map's "Meld herrie" button does), `top_meldingen` (most-reported flights). Registry name `nl.schipholherrie/schipholherrie`. Details in api.md, section MCP. - [Towns dataset (JSON)](https://schipholherrie.nl/plaatsen.json): slug, name, coordinates, population, distance/bearing from Schiphol and estimated Lden for every town that has a page. - [Runways (GeoJSON)](https://schipholherrie.nl/runways.json): Schiphol runway geometry. - [Official noise contours (GeoJSON)](https://schipholherrie.nl/contouren-officieel.json): Schiphol's legal END noise map of the 2021 round, computed with 2019 traffic (IenW/RIVM, public domain), Lden 55–≥75 and Lnight 50–≥70 in 5 dB bands, simplified to ~5 m; the map draws it as an optional overlay (`/kaart.html?off=Lden`). - [Population grid (JSON)](https://schipholherrie.nl/bevolking500m.json): CBS Vierkantstatistieken 500 m 2024 (CC-BY 4.0) within 55 km of Schiphol: cell centre, inhabitants, dwellings. - [Postcodes dataset (JSON)](https://schipholherrie.nl/pc4.json): CBS 4-digit postcodes with centroid, inhabitants, dwellings, sampled Lden and nearest town slug. Base URL `https://schipholherrie.nl`. The API serves the site's own pages and app: a request without the browser's same-origin marks gets `403`, and there is no CORS. Agents should read the pages and the open datasets (`/plaatsen.json`, `/pc4.json`, `/runways.json`, `/contouren-officieel.json`) instead; the page URLs above carry the same information as the endpoints, rendered. All read endpoints are `GET` and return `application/json`. Per-IP rate limits (per minute): `/api/noise/contour` 40, `/api/noise/lines` 90, `/api/noise/timeseries` 60, other `/api/noise/*` 120, `/api/aircraft` 120. On 429 honour `Retry-After`. Responses carry `Cache-Control`; do not poll faster than the max-age. ## Methodology in one paragraph Positions come from ADS-B (transmitted by the aircraft themselves, received by volunteer antennas). Each aircraft gets a source level at 300 m slant distance, anchored on a 737-800 at ~84 dB(A) climbing, ~79 level and ~76 descending (NPD-curve / NOMOS levels for that distance), with per-type offsets from the ICAO/EASA noise certification: heavier types a surcharge, 737 MAX / A220 a discount, small props a large one. Level at the ground falls by 6 dB per doubling of slant distance plus atmospheric absorption; contributions of all aircraft are summed energetically. Not modelled: wind, temperature, engine-specific differences, shielding, exact procedures. For official measurements see NOMOS (Schiphol) and Sensornet; complaints go to BAS (Bewoners Aanspreekpunt Schiphol). ## Attribution Please cite as "Schiphol Herrie (schipholherrie.nl), modelled estimate based on ADS-B data from adsb.lol" and mention that values are estimates.
